Capitán Prat Province (which is Provincia de Capitán Prat in Spanish) is one of the four provinces in southern Chile. It is part of the Aysén Region, also known as Region XI. The main city and capital of the province is Cochrane. This province is named after Arturo Prat, a famous naval hero from Chile.

About Capitán Prat Province

Capitán Prat Province is quite large, but not many people live there. It is the eighth largest province in Chile by land area. However, it is the fourth least populated province in the country. This means it has very few people living in a big space. It is the most spread out province in mainland Chile.

Land and People

In 2002, a count of the people (called a census) was done by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This count showed that the province covers about 37,043.6 square kilometers. At that time, 3,837 people lived there. There were 2,154 men and 1,683 women.

Most people, about 2,217 (57.8%), lived in towns or cities. The rest, about 1,620 (42.2%), lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in the province grew by a small amount, only 56 people.

How the Province is Run

Capitán Prat is an administrative division in Chile. It is managed by a provincial governor. This governor is chosen by the President of Chile.

Local Government

The province is made up of three smaller areas called communes. Each commune has its own local government, led by an alcalde (which is like a mayor). The three communes in Capitán Prat Province are:
