Cochrane was started in 1954. Back then, it was called Pueblo Nuevo, which means "New Town." For many years, it was hard to reach Cochrane by road. But in 1988, the Carretera Austral (a major highway) finally connected it to the rest of Chile.

The town was later named Cochrane to honor Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald. He was a brave British naval captain. He became the first Admiral of the Chilean Navy in 1818. He helped Chile win its independence from Spain.

Cochrane is the southernmost town along the Carretera Austral. Only a few small villages, like Caleta Tortel and Villa O'Higgins, are further south. Cochrane is also just south of the new Patagonia National Park. The town center has a park. Around the park, you can find shops, a bakery, a small supermarket, and a place for tourist information. Nearby, there is a tall mountain called Monte San Lorenzo, also known as Cerro Cochrane.

About the People of Cochrane

In 2002, a study called a census counted the people in Cochrane. The town and its surrounding area cover about 8,930.5 square kilometers. There were 2,867 people living there. This included 1,555 men and 1,312 women.

Most people (77.3%) lived in the main town area. The rest (22.7%) lived in the rural areas outside the town. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Cochrane went down a little bit.

How Cochrane is Governed

Cochrane is a commune, which is like a local government area in Chile. It is run by a municipal council. The leader of the council is called an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people every four years.

From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Patricio Ulloa Georgia. The council also has several members who help make decisions for the town. These members include:

  • María Quijanes Millao
  • Lindor Lopez Cruces
  • Jorge Patricio Abello Moll
  • Patricia Quintana Cruces
  • Tatiana Aguilera Lopez
  • Andres Chavarria Alarcon

Cochrane is also part of larger government groups. It is in the 59th electoral district for the Chamber of Deputies. This is one of the two main parts of Chile's national parliament. The commune is also part of the 18th senatorial area for the Senate, which is the other part of the parliament.

Cochrane's Weather

Cochrane has an oceanic climate, which means it has mild temperatures. It also tends to be drier in the summer. The town is located in a valley. This valley is behind the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. This location helps protect it from very heavy rainfall. Even so, there is still enough rain to support forests. This is different from the drier areas further east in Argentinian Patagonia.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Cochrane was 36.1 degrees Celsius (97.0 degrees Fahrenheit) in February 2019. The coldest temperature ever recorded was -16.2 degrees Celsius (2.8 degrees Fahrenheit) in July 1995.
