Monte San Lorenzo, also called Monte Cochrane, is a very tall mountain located on the border between Argentina and Chile. It stands in a region known as Patagonia. This impressive peak reaches a height of 3,706 meters (about 12,159 feet).
The mountain has two names. Its Chilean name, Monte Cochrane, comes from the nearby town of Cochrane. This town is often a starting point for people who want to climb the mountain. The first time someone successfully climbed to the top was in 1943. This historic climb was made by Alberto María de Agostini.
Glaciers of San Lorenzo
Monte San Lorenzo is covered by three large glaciers. Two of these glaciers are on the Argentine side of the mountain. The third glacier is on the Chilean side.
Scientists have noticed something important about the glaciers in Argentina. They show clear signs of getting smaller. This process is called retreat. It means the glaciers are melting and shrinking over time.
