This house was once home to Captain George Raabe. He was a steamboat pilot on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. He worked for the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company. What Makes the House Special?
The Capt. George Raabe House has some cool features. It has a wide roof that slopes down on the sides. There's also a half-tower, which looks like part of a round tower. The front porch is supported by classic-looking columns. These columns give the house an elegant feel.
Inside the Raabe House
Near the main entrance, you can see fluted pilasters. These are like flat columns built into the wall. The house was first built for one family. But in the 1940s, it was changed into two separate homes.
The first floor has a five-room apartment. The upstairs apartment has three rooms. In 1983, a second front door was added. This new door leads directly to the stairs for the second-floor apartment.
Who Was Captain George Raabe?
Captain George Raabe was an interesting person. He was born in Norway in 1852. When he was about 14, he moved to California with his family. Around two years later, he moved to Oregon. That's when he started working for the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company.
Captain Raabe's River Career
George Raabe became a captain of a steamboat called the Old McMinnville. Later, he helped oversee the building of another steamboat, the William H. Hoag. In 1880, he built the steamboat Salem. He also commanded the famous steamboat Multnomah.
In 1898, Captain Raabe went to Alaska. There was a big gold rush happening at the time. He piloted steamers on the Stikine River during this exciting period.
Raabe's Life in Portland
Around 1900, Captain Raabe came back to Portland. He bought the house from the family of James C. Hawthorne. Dr. Hawthorne was a well-known doctor in East Portland. Captain Raabe continued to pilot steamboats on the local rivers.
He lived in the house until about 1907. Then he sold it to John H. James. After that, Captain Raabe returned to Alaska. He piloted boats on the Yukon River. This river runs between White Horse and Dawson.
