Why the Name Cardenal Caro?
This province is named after a very important person: Cardinal José María Caro Rodríguez. He was born in Pichilemu, which is now the capital of the province. He was also the first person from Chile to become a Cardinal.
A Brief History of the Province
The idea for Cardenal Caro Province started a long time ago.
How the Province Was Formed
On July 13, 1973, the President at the time, Salvador Allende, officially announced that a new area called the Cardenal Caro Department would be created. This announcement was made public in August of that year. The town of Marchigüe was chosen as its capital.
However, a big change in the government happened in September 1973. Because of this, the plan for the Cardenal Caro Department didn't happen right away.
The Official Creation
Later, on October 3, 1979, General Augusto Pinochet officially created the Cardenal Caro Province. Several towns that were once part of other provinces became part of this new one. These towns included Litueche (which used to be called El Rosario), La Estrella, Marchigüe, Paredones, and Pichilemu. Also, Navidad joined the province.
