Cardwell is a small community in Jefferson County, Montana, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a settled area that the government counts for population, but it's not officially a city or town. In 2020, 62 people lived there. Cardwell is part of the larger Helena area.
The town got its name from Edward Cardwell, who was a rancher and a state senator in the area.

Geography of Cardwell
Cardwell covers about 5.9 square kilometers (2.3 square miles) of land. Only a tiny part, about 0.1 square kilometers, is water.
The Jefferson River flows along the southern edge of Cardwell. This river also marks the border with Madison County. Cardwell is right where the Jefferson Canyon begins. This part of the river has fewer trees and less wildlife compared to other sections.
Nearby Attractions
About 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of Cardwell are the Lewis and Clark Caverns. These amazing caves offer tours during the summer months. They are also home to special bats called Townsend's big-eared bats. Years ago, a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps used Cardwell as their base camp while they were developing the caverns into a state park.

Transportation and Services
Interstate 90, a major highway, runs along the northern edge of Cardwell. You can get onto I-90 from Exit 256. This highway leads east about 52 miles (84 km) to Bozeman and west about 33 miles (53 km) to Butte.
Montana Highway 2 also runs near I-90 on the north side of town.
The closest airport is Bert Mooney Airport in Butte. Butte is also where you'll find the nearest hospitals and medical care.

A well-known American newscaster named Chet Huntley was born in Cardwell in 1911.
