Carex luzulina is a type of plant called a sedge. It's also known as the woodrush sedge because it looks a bit like a plant called woodrush. Sedges are grass-like plants that often grow in wet places.
Where It Grows
This sedge plant is found in western North America. You can see it growing from British Columbia in Canada, down through California in the United States, and as far east as Wyoming. It loves wet places! You'll often find it in bogs (which are like very wet, spongy wetlands) and in damp mountain meadows.
What It Looks Like
Carex luzulina grows in clumps, either loosely or closely packed together. It has stems that can reach up to 90 centimeters (about 3 feet) tall. These stems grow from underground parts called rhizomes, which are like creeping stems that help the plant spread.
At the top of the stems, you'll find the plant's flowers. These flowers grow in small groups called spikes. The spikes have dark-colored scales around them. After the flowers, the plant produces small fruits. Each fruit is covered by a sac-like layer called a perigynium. This sac is usually greenish, but it can also have some dark purple spots.
