Caribou (drink) facts for kids
Caribou is a special traditional drink from French-Canada. It is often enjoyed at festivals and celebrations. This sweet drink is usually made with red wine, a type of spirit, and maple syrup or sugar.
You can make Caribou at home, but it's also sold already mixed by the Société des alcools du Québec. People drink it either warm or cold, depending on the weather. It's often served with citrus fruits and cinnamon, similar to a warm spiced wine. Sometimes, people also add cloves and nutmeg to give it more flavor.
Where is Caribou enjoyed?
Caribou is a very popular drink at the Quebec Winter Carnival. People often carry it around in special hollow plastic walking canes or buy it from outdoor stands. It's also served during the National Holiday of Quebec. Another place where Caribou is a favorite is the Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There, it's sometimes even served in cups made of ice!
How did Caribou get its name?
The name "Caribou" is thought to come from the caribou animal. Long ago, hunters and loggers in colonial times might have had a drink that helped them stay warm while working. This drink was said to be named after the caribou.
