Carl Theodore Boles (born October 31, 1934 – died April 8, 2022) was an American baseball player. He played for seven years in minor league baseball. He also spent six years playing in Japan. Carl had a short time playing in the Major Leagues for the San Francisco Giants in 1962. He threw and batted with his right hand. Carl was about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 185 pounds. He went to college at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Playing for the San Francisco Giants
When Carl Boles joined the Giants in August 1962, he was 27 years old. He was playing very well in the minor leagues. He was hitting for a .337 batting average. He also had hit 18 home runs in the Double-A Texas League.
Carl played 19 games with the Giants. He started four games as a left fielder. He also came into games 12 times as a pinch hitter. Three times, he was a pinch runner.
Key Moments with the Giants
In the 1962 season, the Giants played against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was a special series to decide who would win the National League championship. In the second game, Carl Boles was a pinch runner. He ran for another player, Ed Bailey, in the eighth inning. Carl scored a tying run for the Giants. Even though they lost that game, the Giants won the championship the next day!
During his two months with the Giants, Carl got nine hits. All of his hits were singles. He finished with a .375 batting average. The Giants later played in the 1962 World Series against the New York Yankees. However, Carl Boles did not play in the World Series. The Yankees won the series.
Playing Baseball in Japan
After his time in the Major Leagues, Carl Boles played baseball in Japan. He played there for six years. During this time, he showed off his power hitting. He had seasons where he hit 26, 28, and even 31 home runs! Carl Boles retired from baseball in 1971.
