Tietgen's Early Life and Work
Tietgen was born on March 19, 1829, in Odense, Denmark. His father managed a club for wealthy people. Carl helped his family at the club when he was a child.
After finishing his business training, he worked in the United Kingdom for five years. He lived in Manchester, England. During this time, he also traveled to northern Germany, Norway, and Sweden. In the United Kingdom, Tietgen learned a lot about private banking. This type of banking was new in Denmark at that time.
Leading Privatbanken
When Tietgen came back to Denmark, he started his own wholesale business in 1855. It was called C.F. Tietgen & Co. He first set it up in Copenhagen at Amagertorv, then moved it to Gammeltorv Market. His business was small, mostly connecting businesses in Manchester and Copenhagen.
In 1857, Tietgen showed how good he was with money and strategy. He helped manage a company that was going bankrupt. Because of this, he was asked to join the management of Privatbanken. Under his leadership, this bank became Denmark's first investment bank. An investment bank helps companies grow by providing money.
For 40 years, Tietgen led Privatbanken. He created and strengthened many companies. He gained control of big companies in different industries.
Building Transportation Companies
In the world of transportation, Tietgen helped build several railroads. He also invested in big companies like Burmeister & Wain and Svitzer in 1872. He created Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab by combining several smaller shipping companies. In 1880, he founded the Thingvalla Line, which was a shipping company.
Connecting the World with Telegraphs and Phones
Tietgen also started several companies for communication. He founded Det Store Nordiske Telegraf-Selskab in 1868. This company helped send messages across long distances. When telephones arrived, he founded KTAS in 1880.
Food and Drink Businesses
In 1872, Tietgen formed De Danske Sukkerfabrikker. This company was a merger of several sugar factories. In 1873, he helped start the Tuborg brewery. He also brought together smaller coffee substitute companies to form De Danske Cikoriefabrikker. Later, in 1881, he merged several small distilleries to create De Danske Spritfabrikker. In 1891, he combined several breweries to form De Forenede Bryggerier.
International Banking
In 1869, Tietgen helped start Banque de Paris with other European bankers. This bank later merged in 1872 to become Paribas, a very large bank.
Tietgen was a leader in bringing companies together. He would merge several competing companies in one industry. This created large companies whose shares could be traded publicly. Privatbanken would become a major owner in these new companies. Tietgen and his business friends also owned parts of them.
He retired from Privatbanken in 1896. This was after he became unwell in Paris in 1894.
