Carle Augustus Woodruff (born August 8, 1841 – died July 20, 1913) was a brave soldier in the United States Army. He served for many years and became a brigadier general. He earned the Medal of Honor for his courage during the American Civil War.
A Young Soldier's Start
Carle Augustus Woodruff was born in Buffalo, New York. His father, Israel Carle Woodruff, was also a colonel in the army. In 1861, Carle became a Second Lieutenant. This meant he was a young officer in the 2nd U.S. Artillery.
He served with a special group called the U.S. Horse Artillery Brigade. This group was part of the Army of the Potomac. Carle was in charge of a small section of artillery.
Bravery in Battle
Carle Woodruff showed great bravery during the Civil War. On July 24, 1863, he was recognized for his courage at Newby's Crossroads, Virginia. For his actions there, he was later given the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for military bravery in the United States.
He also earned special honorary promotions for his actions in other battles. He was recognized for his courage at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. He also showed great bravery at the Battle of Trevilian Station in June 1864. Carle Woodruff also led Battery M, 2nd U.S. Artillery, at the Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864.
After the Civil War
After the Civil War ended, Carle Woodruff stayed in the regular army. He continued to rise through the ranks. In 1869, he became a captain. He steadily moved up, becoming a major in 1894 and a lieutenant colonel in 1899. By 1901, he was a colonel.
He eventually reached the high rank of brigadier general. This shows his long and dedicated service to his country.
Later Life and Legacy
Carle Augustus Woodruff passed away in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was buried there at Oakwood Cemetery.
His name lives on in a few places. Battery Woodruff at Fort Hughes is named after him. Also, a group in Raleigh, NC, called the Carle A. Woodruff Lodge, is named in his honor.
