Carlo Yaír Costly Molina is a famous Honduran footballer. He was born on July 18, 1982. He plays as a striker, which is a player who tries to score goals. Currently, he plays for Lone FC in the Liga de Ascenso.

Before he went to play in Europe, Carlo Costly was a top scorer. He played for a team called Platense in Honduras. In the 2006–07 season, he scored the most goals in the Honduras Apertura tournament.

Club Career Highlights

Carlo Costly is the son of another famous footballer, Anthony Costly. Even though Carlo is from Honduras, he spent a lot of his life in Mexico. When he was 14, he moved to Mexico City and lived there for 11 years. This is where he started his football journey.

Early Football Days in Mexico

In Mexico, Carlo played for the reserve teams of several big clubs. These included Atlético Celaya, Monarcas Morelia, Atlas, and Pumas UNAM. Playing for these teams helped him develop his skills.

Return to Honduras and First Success

After his time in Mexico, Costly returned to Honduras. This is where his path to becoming a well-known player really began. Club Deportivo Platense gave him a big chance. He became the top goal scorer in the Honduras Apertura 2006–07 season. He scored ten goals in 19 games, which is a great achievement!

Playing in Europe and Beyond

His success in Honduras caught the eye of European clubs. A Polish club called GKS Bełchatów first loaned him, which means they borrowed him for a short time. He played so well that they decided to buy him permanently for a record amount of money.

Later, in January 2009, Costly joined Birmingham City in England on a loan. This team was in the second tier of English football at the time. He played his first game for them on February 7, 2009.

In 2010, Costly moved to SC Vaslui in Romania. He signed a contract for three and a half years. After recovering from an injury, he also played for Atlas in Mexico again. He also spent some time playing for Houston Dynamo in the United States in 2011. In 2012, he moved to Veria F.C. in Greece.

Later Career and Return to Honduras

Carlo Costly continued his journey by joining Guizhou Zhicheng in China in 2013. He made a fantastic start there, scoring two goals in his very first game on August 4.

In 2014, he signed with Real España back in Honduras. After the 2014 World Cup, he decided to step away from playing for his country's national team for a while. He then joined Gaziantepspor in Turkey for the 2014–15 season.

In 2015, Costly joined Olimpia, one of the biggest clubs in Honduras. He played there until 2019, when he moved to Marathón. He has continued to play for Honduran clubs, including another spell at Platense and Marathón, before joining Lone FC in 2022.

International Career for Honduras

Carlo Costly has been a very important player for the Honduras national team, often called the Catrachos. He scored a goal in his very first game for them against Trinidad and Tobago in 2007.

Gold Cup Achievements

He helped Honduras reach the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in both 2009 and 2011. The Gold Cup is a big tournament for teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Carlo is the second-highest goal scorer for Honduras in Gold Cup history, with eight goals. This includes scoring three goals in one game (a hat-trick) against Grenada in the 2011 tournament.

FIFA World Cup Journeys

Costly was a key player when Honduras qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Sadly, he couldn't play in the tournament because of an injury.

He scored seven goals in 13 games during the qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This included another hat-trick against Canada. In June 2014, he was chosen to be part of the Honduran team for the World Cup in Brazil. He played his first World Cup game on June 15 against France.

In the next match, Carlo Costly made history. He scored Honduras's first World Cup goal in 32 years! This was in a game against Ecuador. He had to leave the final game of the 2014 World Cup early due to an injury. After that match, he announced he was retiring from the national team to give younger players a chance. However, he was called up again for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. His last game for Honduras was a 0–0 draw against Australia in 2017.
