Carlos Andrés Escudé Carvajal (born August 10, 1948 – died January 1, 2021) was an Argentine political scientist and writer. A political scientist studies how governments work and how countries interact. During the 1990s, he was a special advisor to Argentina's foreign minister, Guido di Tella. He helped shape Argentina's foreign policy, especially how it dealt with Western countries after the Falklands War.

Life and Work

Carlos Escudé was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was a very smart student and loved learning.

Education and Achievements

He finished his first degree in sociology in 1973 from the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina. Sociology is the study of how people live together in groups.

Later, he went to study at St Antony's College, Oxford in England. In 1978, he moved to Yale University in the United States. He received a special scholarship called a Fulbright Fellowship to help him study there.

In 1981, he earned his Ph.D. in political science from Yale. A Ph.D. is the highest university degree you can get. This showed he was an expert in his field.

He received many awards for his work:

  • In 1984, he got a Guggenheim Fellowship. This is a special award for people who show great ability in their field.
  • In 1986, he was honored with the Order of Bernardo O'Higgins. This award was for helping to create peace and friendship between Argentina and Chile.
  • In 1996, he received the Konex Award. This is a big award in Argentina for important achievements.
  • In 2003, he was named an Ashley Fellow at Trent University in Canada. They called him "likely the most distinguished political theorist in Latin America." This means he was seen as one of the best thinkers about politics in his region.

Carlos Escudé wrote many books. These books were published in Argentina, the United States, and Italy. He also wrote articles for academic journals. These articles were published in many countries around the world.

He was a visiting professor at famous universities like Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University. This means he taught at these universities for a short time.

Carlos Escudé passed away on January 1, 2021, in Buenos Aires. He died from COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Argentina. His wife, Mónica La Madrid, had also died from the same illness a few months earlier in 2020.
