Carlos Fernando Navarro Montoya is a famous former football player. He was born in Medellín, Colombia, on February 26, 1966. Carlos played as a goalkeeper, which means he was the player who tries to stop the ball from going into the goal.
Even though he was born in Colombia, he later became an Argentine citizen. During his amazing 25-year career, he played for many teams in different countries. These included Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay. He played for 15 different clubs, but he is best known for his time at Boca Juniors. In total, he played over 800 games!
Contents
Carlos Navarro Montoya was often called El Mono (which means "the monkey") in Argentina. This nickname came from his quick and agile movements as a goalkeeper. He started his professional football journey in Argentina when he was just 18 years old. His first team was Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield.
Playing for Boca Juniors
In 1988, after playing for a year in his home country with Independiente Santa Fe, Carlos joined Boca Juniors. This was a huge step in his career! He played for Boca Juniors for nearly ten years. During this time, he almost never missed a game. He even set amazing club records:
- He played 180 games in a row.
- He went 824 minutes without letting an opponent score a goal. That's a long time!
In total, he played 396 official games for Boca Juniors. His last game with the team, however, ended in a 3-1 loss to Club Atlético Banfield.
Time in Spain and Other Teams
In January 1997, when he was almost 31, Carlos moved to Spain. He joined a team called CF Extremadura in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. After that, he played for two more Spanish teams, CP Mérida and CD Tenerife. Unfortunately, all three of these teams ended up moving down to a lower league during his time there.
After a short period in Chile with Club Deportes Concepción, he went back to Argentina. He continued to play top-level football for several teams. These included Chacarita Juniors, Club Atlético Independiente, and Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
Retirement from Football
In his later years, Carlos played for many different teams in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. He didn't stay with one team for very long during this period. On July 10, 2009, when he was 43 years old, Carlos Navarro Montoya announced that he was retiring from professional football. He said, "It is 'goodbye', but also 'thank you'".
International Football for Carlos
Carlos Navarro Montoya was born in Colombia and played for the Colombian national team three times. Later in his career, he became an Argentine citizen. He really wanted to play for the Argentine national team.
However, FIFA, the international football organization, said he couldn't. This was because he had already played for Colombia in three qualifying games for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Even though FIFA changed its rules in 1998 and said he could play for Argentina, Carlos was 32 years old by then. People thought he was too old, so he never got to play for his adopted country.
After he stopped playing, Carlos Navarro Montoya became a coach. His first job as a manager was with Chacarita Juniors. He was only there for a short time, winning just one out of six matches.
In December 2013, he returned to Boca Juniors, but this time as a coach for their youth teams. He worked in different roles helping young players. He stayed at Boca Juniors until September 2020. A few days later, he took over as manager for Club Deportivo Guadalajara in Spain. However, he was dismissed after only five league games.
