Carlos Fernando Navarro Montoya (born February 26, 1966) is a famous retired football player. He played as a goalkeeper, which means his job was to stop the ball from going into the goal. Carlos was born in Medellín, Colombia. He played for the Colombian national team three times. Later in his career, he also became a citizen of Argentina.

Carlos had a very long professional career that lasted 25 years. He played for many different teams in several countries. These included Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay. He played for 15 different clubs in total. His most well-known time was with Boca Juniors, one of Argentina's biggest clubs. He played over 800 games in all competitions during his career.

Playing Career Highlights

Carlos Navarro Montoya was nicknamed El Mono, which means "The Monkey" in Argentina. He started his professional football journey at just 18 years old. His first team was Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield in Argentina.

Time with Boca Juniors

In 1988, after playing for a year in Colombia, Carlos joined Boca Juniors. This was where he became a true legend. He played almost every game for nearly ten years. In his full seasons, he never played fewer than 35 matches. He even set amazing club records. He played 180 games in a row and went 824 minutes without letting in a goal. This means he kept the ball out of the net for a very long time! In total, he played 396 official games for Boca Juniors.

Playing in Other Countries

In January 1997, when he was almost 31, Carlos moved to Spain. He joined CF Extremadura in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. After that, he played for two more Spanish teams, CP Mérida and CD Tenerife. He also had a short time playing in Chile for Club Deportes Concepción.

Later, he returned to Argentina. He played for several more top-flight teams there. These included Chacarita Juniors, Club Atlético Independiente, and Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. He also played in Brazil and Uruguay. On July 10, 2009, at the age of 43, Carlos announced he was retiring from professional football. He said it was "goodbye" but also "thank you" to the sport.

International Football

Carlos Navarro Montoya wanted to play for the Argentine national team because he became an Argentine citizen. However, FIFA, the world football organization, said he couldn't. This was because he had already played for Colombia in three qualifying games for the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

In 1998, FIFA changed its mind and gave him special permission to play for Argentina. But by then, Carlos was 32 years old. He was considered too old to join the national team, so he never got to play for Argentina.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Carlos Navarro Montoya started coaching. His first job as a manager was with Chacarita Juniors. He later returned to Boca Juniors in December 2013. This time, he worked as a deputy director for their youth teams and a youth coach. He held several different roles there until September 2020. In September 2020, he became the coach for Club Deportivo Guadalajara in Spain, but he left that role in November of the same year.
