Carlton is a small city located in Madison County, Georgia, in the United States. In 2020, about 263 people lived there.
History of Carlton
Carlton was once called "Berkeley." This was to make sure people didn't mix it up with another city named Carrollton, Georgia. The state government of Georgia officially made Carlton a city in 1892.
Geography and Location
Carlton is found in the southeastern part of Madison County. The city is located along what used to be Georgia State Route 72. It is about 5 miles (8 km) east of Comer. It is also about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of Elberton.
The South Fork of the Broad River flows just south of Carlton. This river joins the main Broad River about 3 miles (5 km) east of town. Watson Mill Bridge State Park is a fun place to visit. It is located on the South Fork, about 2.5 miles (4 km) southwest of Carlton.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Carlton covers an area of about 1.0 square mile (2.6 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.30%, is water.
