Carmencita Ongsiako Reyes (born November 9, 1931 – died January 7, 2019) was an important Filipina politician. She served in several big roles in the government. She was an Assemblywoman, a Congresswoman for Marinduque, and even the Governor of Marinduque. She dedicated many years to public service in the Philippines.
Serving in the Batasang Pambansa
Carmencita Reyes became an Assemblywoman in 1984. This was a special role in the Batasang Pambansa, which was the law-making body at that time. She was part of the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan party, which was led by President Ferdinand Marcos.
Her husband, Edmundo M. Reyes, also held an important government job. He was appointed as the Commissioner on Immigration by President Marcos. Carmencita Reyes served as an Assemblywoman until 1986. This was when the People Power Revolution happened, which led to President Marcos leaving power.
A Career in Congress and as Governor
After her time as an Assemblywoman, Carmencita Reyes continued her political career. She became a Congresswoman for Marinduque. She served in this role for many years, from 1978 to 1998, and then again from 2007 to 2010.
Later, she became the Governor of Marinduque. She held this position from 1998 to 2007. She was elected again and served as Governor from 2010 until her passing in 2019. Throughout her life, she worked hard to represent the people of Marinduque.
