Carol Woods (born November 13, 1943) is an American actress and singer. She is known for her powerful voice and roles in movies and on stage. You might have seen her in films like Sweet and Lowdown (1999), The Honeymooners (2005), and Across the Universe (2007).
One of her most famous moments was at the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008. She sang the song "Let It Be" from the movie Across the Universe with co-star Timothy Mitchum. The audience loved her performance so much that they gave her a standing ovation, which is when everyone stands up to clap.
Inspired by Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Woods recorded the song "America." This song was written by Grammy Award winner Julie Gold.

Theater Work
Carol Woods is a star of Broadway, which is home to some of the most famous plays and musicals in the world. She has played the role of Matron "Mama" Morton in the popular musical Chicago. She also appeared in the 2001 revival of Follies, a musical by the famous composer Stephen Sondheim. A "revival" is a new production of a play or musical that has been performed before.
Some of her other Broadway credits include The Goodbye Girl in 1993 and Grind in 1985. For her role in the London production of Blues in the Night, she was nominated for an Olivier Award, a very important theater award in the United Kingdom.
She was also a founding member of the National Actors Theatre, started by actor Tony Randall. She appeared in their first two shows in 1992, including the famous play The Crucible.

Carol Woods made her first movie appearance in 1987. She later acted alongside stars like Liza Minnelli and Shelley Winters in the 1991 movie Stepping Out. An interesting fact is that her real-life son, Raymond Rickman, played her son in the movie too!
