Early Life and Education
Caroline Thompson was born in Washington, D.C. Her mother, Bettie Marshall, was a teacher, and her father, Thomas Carlton Thompson, Jr., was a lawyer. She went to school in Washington, D.C., when she was younger.
Later, she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to attend Radcliffe College. She then graduated from Amherst College in 1978. She studied English and classic literature there.
Family Life
Caroline Thompson was married to Henry Bromell, who was also a writer. She later married Steve Nicolaides, a producer for movies and TV shows.
Caroline Thompson's Career
Starting in Hollywood
Caroline Thompson moved to Los Angeles to start her career. She worked as a freelance writer, reviewing books. In 1983, she published her first novel called First Born. A director named Penelope Spheeris wanted to make it into a movie. Caroline learned how to write movie scripts while working on this project. Even though the movie was never made, it inspired her to become a screenwriter.
Working with Tim Burton
The famous director Tim Burton was very impressed with Caroline's novel First Born. He felt the book had the same kind of interesting ideas he wanted for his movie Edward Scissorhands. So, he hired her to write the script for Edward Scissorhands. This was a big step in her career.
