Carroll Creek is a small river, about 8.3 miles (13.4 kilometers) long, located in Frederick County, Maryland. It's a "tributary," which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger river. Carroll Creek flows into the Monocacy River.

About Carroll Creek

Carroll Creek is an important waterway in Frederick County. It helps carry water from the land into larger rivers. This creek is part of a bigger system of rivers that eventually flows into the Potomac River.

Where it Starts and Flows

The very beginning of Carroll Creek is called its "headwaters." These headwaters are found on the eastern side of Catoctin Mountain. This area is southeast of Gambrill State Park. From there, the creek flows generally eastward.

It travels through the city of Frederick. As it moves, other smaller streams, called "tributaries," join it. For example, Culler Lake is one of its tributaries. Finally, Carroll Creek reaches and empties into the Monocacy River.

Its Name and History

Long ago, the Shawnee Native Americans lived in this area. They had their own names for the rivers and creeks. They called the Monocacy River Monnockkesey. This name meant "river with many bends."

The Shawnee also gave Carroll Creek a special name. They called it Walkwaki Methtegui. This name translates to "down in the gully creek." It's a cool way to imagine how the creek might have looked to them, flowing in a low valley.
