Cartago is a small community in Inyo County, California, United States. Its name comes from the Spanish word for "Carthage", an ancient city. Cartago is located on the west side of Owens Lake, about 3 miles (5 km) north-northwest of Olancha. In 2020, the population of Cartago was 62 people.

History
How Cartago got its name
Cartago was named after the ancient city of Carthage. The first post office in Cartago opened its doors in 1918.
Cartago's past as a port
During the 1870s, mining was a very important activity in the area. Cartago became a busy port for steamboats. These boats were used to ship wood and ore across Owens Lake. Before it was called Cartago, the community had other names. These included Carthage, Daniersburg, and Lakeville.
