In 2011, Carter joined the Rockford IceHogs, a minor league team for the Chicago Blackhawks. He played so well that the Blackhawks signed him to an NHL contract in February 2012.

On April 27, 2013, Carter made his first NHL start against the St. Louis Blues. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup that year, which is the biggest prize in hockey! Even though Carter didn't play enough games to have his name on the Cup, he still received a championship ring.

Time with the Nashville Predators

In July 2013, Carter Hutton joined the Nashville Predators. He became their main goalie for much of the 2013–14 NHL season when their star goalie, Pekka Rinne, was injured. Carter had a great season, winning 20 games. He was even named the NHL's Third Star of the Week in December for his amazing saves.

In 2016, Carter was nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This award goes to a player who shows great determination and dedication to hockey.

Success with the St. Louis Blues

After three seasons in Nashville, Carter signed with the St. Louis Blues in July 2016. His coach praised him for being one of the best players in training camp. In his first game with the Blues, he made 33 saves to help them win!

For the 2017 NHL Winter Classic game, Carter designed a special goalie mask. It featured symbols of St. Louis, like the St. Louis Cardinals' bird and the Blues' logo. He even got a signed baseball from the family of a famous baseball player, Stan Musial, because of his cool mask!

Carter had a fantastic season in 2017–18. He led the entire NHL in save percentage (meaning he stopped a very high percentage of shots) and goals-against average (meaning he let in very few goals). He was one of the best backup goalies in the league.

Playing for the Buffalo Sabres

In July 2018, Carter signed a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres. He quickly became an important player for the team. He earned his first win with the Sabres on October 6, 2018.

During the 2019–20 season, Carter had some amazing games. He got his first shutout (meaning he didn't let any goals in) for the Sabres on October 14. A few days later, he set a team record by making 47 saves in another shutout game! Because of his great play, he was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week.

Later that season, Carter faced some challenges, including a vision problem. He continued to work hard and play for the Sabres until the end of the 2020–21 season.

Final NHL Teams

After his time with the Sabres, Carter signed with the Arizona Coyotes in July 2021. He played a few games before a knee injury sidelined him. After trying to recover, he re-injured his ankle.

In February 2022, Carter was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He decided to retire from professional hockey on June 14, 2022, after a 12-season career.
