When Was Cary Established?
The history of Cary began long ago with land surveys. In the summer of 1851, a team from the U.S. government came to survey the land. They measured and mapped out the six-mile square area that would later become Cary.
Later that year, another team carefully marked all the section corners. This meant they walked through the woods and swamps, using tools like a chain and a compass to measure everything precisely.
After their work, the main surveyor wrote a description of the land. He said the area was mostly flat, except for some rolling hills in the northern part. He also noted that there was a lot of sandstone there. The soil was generally good for farming, especially in the northeast. The area had many trees, including sugar maples, oaks, lindens, tamaracks, and pine trees. Swamps had alders, and the streams were fed by these swamps.
The Town of Cary was officially separated from the Town of Wood in 1901. It was named after a railroad stop that used to be in the area but no longer exists.
