The Story of Casale FBC
Casale Foot Ball Club started in 1909. At that time, Casale Monferrato was a very important place for football in Italy. Many big clubs like Genoa, Pro Vercelli, Milan, Torino, and Juventus were nearby. Casale quickly became one of these top teams.
In May 1913, Casale made history. They became the first Italian club to beat a professional English team! They won 2–1 against Reading F.C.. This was a huge deal because Reading had beaten other strong Italian teams, even the Italian national team.
The very next season, Casale won their first and only national championship. Back then, Italian football was organized by regions. Casale won their regional division. Then they played against other top teams from the north of Italy. After winning that, they faced Lazio, the champions from central and southern Italy. Casale won the final matches with scores of 7–1 and 0–2, becoming the national champions of 1914!
After World War I, Casale stayed in the top football division for about 20 years. However, as football became more professional, Casale slowly moved down to lower leagues. Their last year in Serie A, Italy's top league, was 1934.
The club faced financial difficulties over the years. Because of this, it was restarted twice, first in 1993 and again in 2013. In 2013, the club got its current name, Casale Foot Ball Club. Fans of Casale have a strong rivalry with the fans of another team, Alessandria.
Famous Players of Casale
Many talented players have worn the black and white jersey of Casale. Five players from the 1913–14 championship-winning team also played for the Italian national team. They all made their first international appearances between 1912 and 1914. These players were:
- Luigi Barbesino
- Giovanni Gallina
- Angelo Mattea
- Giuseppe Parodi
- Amedeo Varese
One of Casale's biggest stars was Umberto Caligaris. He was a fantastic defender. He played for Casale from 1919 to 1928. During his time with the nerostellati, he played 37 games for the Italy national football team. He even played in the 1924 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics. After leaving Casale, he joined Juventus. His record of 59 international games for Italy was a national record for about 40 years!
Another famous player was Eraldo Monzeglio. He later played for Italy many times, including in the 1934 and 1938 World Cups. He first played in Serie A with Casale in the 1923–24 season. The next season, he moved to Bologna.
Piero Operto, a left back for the famous Grande Torino team, also played for Casale from 1946 to 1948. Sadly, he died in the Superga air disaster.
