A Look Back: History of Casey Abajo
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Casey Abajo, along with two other barrios named Río Arriba and Cercado, had a total population of 1,019 people.

Understanding Barrios and Sectors
In Puerto Rico, a barrio is like a small district or neighborhood within a larger town or municipality. Think of it as a specific part of a city or county.
What are Sectors?
Barrios are often divided even further into smaller areas called sectores (which means sectors in English). These sectors are like very local neighborhoods or small communities within a barrio.
The names for these sectors can be different. Some are simply called sector, while others might be named urbanización, reparto, barriada, or residencial. Each name describes a slightly different type of community.
