Saint Casilda of Toledo (Spanish: Santa Casilda de Toledo) lived a long time ago, from about 950 to 1050. She is honored as a saint in both the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. People celebrate her on April 9th each year.
Casilda was a Muslim princess, the daughter of the ruler of Toledo. She was known for being very kind to Christian prisoners. Like other saints, a special story called the Miracle of the roses is told about her. In this story, bread she was carrying turned into flowers. Even though Casilda lived before some other saints with similar stories, her life story was written down much later. This means her legend might have been influenced by their tales.
Her Story
According to her legend, Saint Casilda was the daughter of a Muslim king of Toledo, named Yahya ibn Ismail Al-Mamun. She felt great pity for the Christian people held in prison. She would often sneak bread to them, hiding it in a basket under her clothes.
One day, her father and his Muslim soldiers stopped her. They asked her to show what she was carrying in her skirt. When she began to open it, the bread she was hiding magically changed into a beautiful bouquet of roses.
Casilda grew up as a Muslim. But when she became very sick as a young woman, she did not want help from the local Arab doctors. Instead, she traveled to northern Spain. She went to a special place with healing waters, a shrine dedicated to San Vicente, near Buezo and Briviesca.
When she was cured, she became a Christian. She was baptized in Burgos, a city where she is still honored today. After her healing, she chose to live a quiet life of solitude (being alone) and penance (showing sorrow for sins). She lived near the miraculous spring that had healed her. It is said that she lived to be 100 years old.
