Castelnau Lake is a freshwater lake located in the town of Baie-Comeau, in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. It's an important part of the Chasse River system.

The area around Castelnau Lake has a few forest roads. These roads help people get to the lake. The main activity around the lake is forestry, which means managing forests for wood.

The lake usually freezes over from early December to late March. It's generally safe to be on the ice from mid-December to mid-March.

About Castelnau Lake

Castelnau Lake is found in the northern part of Baie-Comeau. It is the main body of water that feeds the Chasse River.

How Big is it?

Castelnau Lake is about 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) long. At its widest point, it measures about 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi). The lake sits at an altitude of 128 metres (420 ft) above sea level.

Where Does the Water Go?

From Castelnau Lake, the water flows into the Chasse River. The river travels for about 9.9 kilometres (6.2 mi), first heading northeast, then south. It even goes through a part of Baie-Comeau before emptying into the northern shore of the Manicouagan estuary, which leads to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Why is it Called Castelnau?

The name "Castelnau Lake" is a tribute to Louise Grigon, who was also known as the Baroness of Castelnau. She was involved in a big project in 1781. This project was about using the islands and islets of Mingan. Other partners in this project included the family of Louis Jolliet and Jacques de Lalande de Gayon.

The name "lac Castelnau" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a place names board in Quebec.
