Castillo de Teayo is an amazing ancient site in Mexico. It's an archaeological site with a special pyramid from a time before Europeans arrived. You can find it in the La Huasteca region, which is in northern Veracruz.

This site was built by the ancient Huastec people. Experts believe people lived here between the 10th and 12th centuries. Today, a town called Castillo de Teayo has grown up around the old pyramid. The town and its area, called a municipality, are named after this historic building.

The name "Teayo" might come from the Huastec language. It could mean "on the stone turtle." Another idea is that it comes from the Nahuatl language, also meaning "Turtle on stone." The site used to be known as Tzapotlán.

A Look at History

This place was once a busy city of the ancient Huastec people. It was active from about the 900s to the 1100s. Later, around the 1400s, it was strongly influenced by the Mexica people, also known as the Aztecs.

In the middle of the modern town, you can still see a pyramid-shaped building. It has its original stairway and a structure on top, which was probably a temple. This is one of the few buildings of its kind still standing in the Mesoamerican area.

Many different cultures influenced Castillo de Teayo. The main ones were the Huastec and later the Aztec. Some experts think the pyramid's design looks Aztec. However, the village also had connections with the Toltec groups from central Mexico.

The Huastec culture grew in areas that are now parts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí. Castillo de Teayo is an important part of this rich cultural region.

The Castillo de Teayo pyramid is a special ancient building. It shows influences from the Toltec, Huastec, and Mexica cultures. The pyramid sits in a valley, right in the center of the town.

It has three main levels, which are slightly sloped. Each level is separated by a flat area. The pyramid has a square base, with each side being about 24 meters long. It stands over 11 meters tall.

Around the pyramid, there used to be many sculptures. These sculptures were of different sizes and styles. Today, you can see them in the local museum.

Over time, the pyramid has faced some challenges. Humidity has caused damage to its stucco and walls. This amazing structure from the 15th century needs careful attention. Local people are keen to see it protected. They want to make sure this important archaeological treasure is safe from water and moisture.
