Castleton-on-Hudson is a small village in New York. It's located in the southwestern part of the town of Schodack. This village is in Rensselaer County, New York, southeast of the city of Albany.
In 2020, about 1,477 people lived there. In 2019, Castleton-on-Hudson was named a "Tree City USA." This award comes from the Arbor Day Foundation. It means the village cares about its trees and green spaces.

The Story of Castleton-on-Hudson
How Castleton Got Its Name
The name Castleton comes from the famous explorer Henry Hudson. He explored the Hudson River a long time ago. As he traveled up the river, he found a village belonging to the Mahican Native American tribe.
There was a very large building on a hill above the river. This building was used to store food. It was so big that people thought it looked like a "castle." This is one idea for how the village got its name.
Another idea comes from a history book written in 1925. It says that Henry Hudson likely landed near where Castleton is today. The chief of the Mohicans lived on "Castle Hill," which is behind the village. This might also be why it was called Castleton.
Early Days and Growth
People first settled in the Castleton area in 1792. The small village officially became part of Rensselaer County on April 13, 1827. At that time, about 100 people lived there. Most of them lived close to the river.
Between 1890 and 1920, the village was very busy. It had small factories, a hotel, and a port. This port allowed boats to easily use the river for trade.
Challenges and Changes
In 1936, a big flood hit the village. It damaged many businesses in the main part of town. Because of the flood, many industries decided to move away.
Today, Castleton-on-Hudson is mostly a place where people live. It's a quiet suburb with some small farms. The village's name was officially changed from Castleton to Castleton-on-Hudson in 1927. An old book from 1860 also mentions that Castleton used to be called Morriches Hastie.

Two important buildings in Castleton-on-Hudson are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special and protected because of their history. They are the District School No. 3 and the Joachim Staats House and Gerrit Staats Ruin.
