Catherine Beaulieu Bouvier Lamoureux (born around 1820 – died 1918) was an important Métis woman who lived in the Northwest Territories of Canada. She was a key founder and leader for her local Métis community. The Métis are a unique Indigenous people in Canada with mixed Indigenous and European ancestry.

Early Life and Education

Catherine was born near Fort Smith, in a place called the Salt River region. Her father was François Beaulieu II and her mother was Louise (or Catherine) St. Germain. In 1845, she became part of the Roman Catholic Church. She went to school with the Grey Nuns in St. Boniface. The Grey Nuns later opened a hospital and school in Fort Providence in 1867. Catherine encouraged First Nations women to use these health services, showing her care for her community.

A Gift for Languages

Catherine Beaulieu was very talented with languages. She could speak several Indigenous languages, including Chipewyan, Cree, Michif, and Slavey. Because she knew so many languages, she was a valuable source of information. People believe she shared much of the Chipewyan oral history that was written down by Fathers Émile Petitot and Grouard. She also worked hard to keep the oral traditions and stories of her own Métis people alive.

Community Contributions

Catherine was known for her dedication to her community. She often traveled long distances, even in winter. She would travel about 150 miles between Fort Providence and Fort Rae. She also helped by carrying mail between these two communities. This shows how important she was in connecting people and places in the vast Northwest Territories.

National Recognition

In 2012, Catherine Beaulieu Bouvier Lamoureux was given a very special honor. The Canadian government declared her a Person of National Historic Significance. This means she is recognized as someone who made a truly important contribution to Canada's history. She was the first woman from the Northwest Territories to receive this important title. She passed away in Fort Providence in 1918.
