Catherine Woodville's Early Life
Catherine was the daughter of Richard Woodville, 1st Earl Rivers, and Jacquetta of Luxembourg. Her family became very important when her older sister, Elizabeth Woodville, married Edward IV of England. This made Elizabeth the Queen of England.
After Elizabeth became queen, many members of the Woodville family gained higher positions. Records from the queen's household show that Catherine grew up living with Queen Elizabeth.
Catherine's First Marriage
Before May 1465, Catherine married Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Both Catherine and Henry were still children when they got married. At Queen Elizabeth's coronation, Catherine and her young husband had to be carried on the shoulders of squires. This was because they were too young to walk in the procession themselves.
Catherine and Henry had four children together:
- Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham (born February 3, 1478 – died May 17, 1521)
- Elizabeth Stafford, Countess of Sussex (born around 1479 – died May 11, 1532)
- Henry Stafford, 1st Earl of Wiltshire (born around 1479 – died April 6, 1523)
- Anne Stafford, Countess of Huntingdon (born around 1483 – died 1544)
In 1483, her husband, the Duke of Buckingham, first supported King Richard III. He helped Richard become king. Later, Buckingham changed his support to Henry Tudor. He led a rebellion to help Henry Tudor become king. This rebellion was not successful. Buckingham was executed for going against the king on November 2, 1483.
Catherine's Second Marriage
After King Richard III was defeated, Henry Tudor became the new king. This happened at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Catherine then married Jasper Tudor, who was the new king's uncle. They were married on November 7, 1485.
Catherine's Third Marriage
Jasper Tudor passed away in December 1495. After his death, Catherine married Sir Richard Wingfield. This marriage happened by February 24, 1496. Sir Richard Wingfield lived longer than Catherine.
