Becoming a Golf Star: Catriona's Early Days
Catriona Lambert was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on August 25, 1969. She grew up in North Berwick, a town famous for its golf courses. She started playing golf on the Children's Course and the North Berwick West Links.
Amateur Success: Winning Before Going Pro
Catriona had a very successful time as a junior and amateur golfer. She became the Scottish Girls champion in 1986. She also won the Scottish Under-21 Stroke Play championship twice, in 1988 and 1989.
She won the Scottish Amateur title three times: in 1991, 1993, and 1994. In 1993, she also won the prestigious British Amateur title. Catriona was part of the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup teams in 1990, 1992, and 1994. The Curtis Cup is a big team competition for amateur women golfers.
She studied accountancy at the University of Stirling, graduating in 1992. This university was one of the few in Britain that offered golf scholarships, helping her combine studies with her passion for golf.
Turning Professional: A Career on Tour
Catriona became a professional golfer in 1995. She joined the LPGA Tour in the United States and the Ladies European Tour at the same time.
First Wins and Major Championship Glory
Her first professional win was in 1996 at the Holden Women's Australian Open. She also won the 1998 McDonald's WPGA Championship on the Ladies European Tour.
A huge moment in her career came on August 2, 2009. She won the Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. This was her first win in a major golf tournament! What made this victory even more amazing was that it happened just 11 weeks after she gave birth to her second daughter, Sophie. She was the first Scottish player to win a women's major golf tournament.
She continued to win on the LPGA Tour, including the Cup Noodles Hawaiian Ladies Open in 2001, the Wendy's Championship for Children in 2004, and the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico in 2011.
Playing for Europe: The Solheim Cup
Catriona has been a very important part of the European Solheim Cup team. The Solheim Cup is a team competition between top women golfers from Europe and the United States. She played in many Solheim Cups, helping Europe win in 2003, 2011, and 2013.
Leading the Team: Solheim Cup Captain
In 2017, Catriona was chosen as a vice-captain for the Solheim Cup. Then, in 2019, she became the captain for the European team! She led her team to victory in 2019 at Gleneagles, Scotland. She was also the captain for the 2021 Solheim Cup, where she again led the European team to defeat the US team in Ohio. Her leadership helped Europe win the cup two times in a row!
Life Off the Course
Catriona is married to Graeme Matthew, who is also her caddy (the person who carries her golf clubs and helps her on the course). They have two daughters, Katie Jessica and Sophie Lauren.
In 2010, Catriona was given the MBE award. In 2020, she received the OBE award. These are special honors given in the United Kingdom for great achievements, in her case, for her services to golf.
