Cavendish is a small village in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. It is the main village of the larger town of Cavendish. A "census-designated place" means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistics.
Before the mid-1800s, Cavendish was known as Duttonsville. In 2010, about 179 people lived in the village. The entire town of Cavendish had a population of 1,367 people.

Phineas Gage's Accident
In 1848, a railroad worker named Phineas Gage had a terrible accident in Cavendish. An iron rod shot through his skull while he was working on a railroad bed. Amazingly, he survived this injury. His case became very important for scientists studying the human brain. A special memorial has been put up in Cavendish to remember Phineas Gage.
Nettie Stevens' Discovery
Cavendish is also the birthplace of Nettie Stevens. She was a scientist who made a big discovery. Nettie Stevens found the Y chromosome. This discovery helped us understand how gender is determined in many living things.
Modern Cavendish Businesses
Today, Cavendish is home to Cavendish Labs. This is a research institute that works on important topics. They focus on AI alignment, which means making sure artificial intelligence is safe.
