Cedar Creek (Sac River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cedar Creek is a cool stream located in the southwestern part of Missouri, flowing through both Dade and Cedar counties. It's a natural waterway that plays a part in the local environment.

Where Does Cedar Creek Begin and End?

Every stream has a starting point, called its source, and an ending point where it joins a larger body of water, known as its confluence.

The Source of Cedar Creek

Cedar Creek begins its journey in Dade County, Missouri. Its exact starting spot is around 37°29′43″N 93°57′11″W / 37.49528°N 93.95306°W / 37.49528; -93.95306. When it first starts, it's a small stream that sometimes dries up, which is why it's called an intermittent stream. This happens in the west-central part of Dade County, near the towns of Greenfield and Sylvania.

Where Cedar Creek Joins Another River

After flowing for a while, Cedar Creek eventually meets and joins the Sac River. This meeting point, or confluence, is in Cedar County at 37°51′03″N 93°49′23″W / 37.85083°N 93.82306°W / 37.85083; -93.82306.

The Path of Cedar Creek

From its start, Cedar Creek winds its way through the landscape, passing by several towns and under different roads.

Journey Through Dade County

The stream first flows north, passing close to Cedarville and going under Missouri Route 97. This is where it leaves Dade County and enters Cedar County.

Flowing Through Cedar County

Once in Cedar County, Cedar Creek continues to meander, meaning it takes a winding path. It flows north-northeast, passing by Jerico Springs and then under Missouri Route 32, west of Stockton. It keeps heading northeast, going under Missouri Route 39 south of Cedar Springs. Finally, it turns east and flows into the Sac River north of Caplinger Mills.

How Cedar Creek Got Its Name

The name "Cedar Creek" is quite straightforward! The stream was named because of the many cedar timber trees that grew along its banks. These trees were a common sight in the area, making "Cedar Creek" a fitting name for this waterway.
