A Look at Ceiba Alta's Past
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From then on, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a special count of people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that Ceiba Alta and a nearby area called Ceiba Baja had a combined population of 1,033 people.
