History of Ceiba Sur

How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.

After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it is controlled by the U.S. but is not a state.

Early Population Counts

In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the combined population of Ceiba Sur and a nearby barrio called Ceiba Norte was 1,408 people.
