Celeste is a small city located in Hunt County, Texas. Its name means Light Blue in Spanish. In 2020, about 809 people lived there.

A Brief History of Celeste
Celeste began because of railroads. In 1886, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway planned a new town. This new town was about 3 miles north of Kingston. Kingston's leaders did not want to offer special deals to the railroad. So, the railway decided to build around Kingston instead.
How Celeste Got Its Name and Grew
Celeste was named after the wife of a Santa Fe railroad official. The two railroad lines helped the town grow very fast. A post office opened in Celeste in 1886. Many businesses from Kingston moved to Celeste. By 1888, there were three churches.
In the mid-1890s, about 600 people lived in Celeste. The town had three mills for grinding grain and cotton. It also had a bank, a weekly newspaper, and a public school. Celeste officially became a city in 1900. Its population grew to 850 people by the start of World War I.
Celeste in the Early 1900s
By 1914, Celeste had two banks and three cotton gins. It also had a water system and an ice factory. There was still a weekly newspaper and about 35 other businesses. In 1926, the population reached 1,022 people. The high school and two elementary schools had 500 students.
Changes Over the Years
After the 1920s, Celeste's population went down. It dropped from 803 in 1933 to 518 by the mid-1960s. The number of businesses also decreased.
However, the town started to grow again after the 1960s. By 1976, the population was 745. In 1982, Celeste had a bank, four churches, ten stores, and a school with 300 students. The population was 733 in 1990 and 817 in 2010.
Where is Celeste Located?
Celeste is in the northwest part of Hunt County. It is located along U.S. Route 69. This road goes northwest about 40 miles to Denison. It also goes southeast about 12 miles to Greenville, which is the main city of Hunt County.
Celeste covers a total area of about 1.34 square miles (3.48 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

- Audie Murphy, a very brave soldier from World War II, was born near Celeste. He was one of the most decorated soldiers in American history.
