History of Centerville
The area now known as Centerville started as a town called Scottsburg in 1854. It was built in the low lands near the Kings River. A ferry crossing, called Poole's Crossing, was also located here.
In 1858, a new ferry service called Hills Ferry began at Poole's Crossing. However, the town and the ferry faced big challenges. During the winter of 1861-1862, a huge flood destroyed them.
After the flood, the town was rebuilt. But in 1867, it was flooded again. Because of these floods, the people decided to rebuild the town on higher ground. This new location was on a bluff, which is a high cliff, overlooking where the old town used to be. When they rebuilt it, they renamed the town Centerville.
A post office for Scottsburgh first opened in 1856. It closed in 1858, then opened again in 1859, but finally closed for good in 1864.
