Where is Central Park Place?
Central Park Place is in a lively part of New York City. It sits between the Hell's Kitchen and Midtown Manhattan neighborhoods. The building is just one block south of Columbus Circle. This circle is also the southern edge of Central Park.
The building has Eighth Avenue on its east side. 57th Street runs along its south side. The land it sits on is almost a perfect square. It covers about 10,042 square feet (932.9 m2) of space. You can easily get to the building using the New York City Subway. Entrances to the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station are right at the base of the tower.
How Central Park Place is Designed
Central Park Place is 628 feet (191 m) tall. It has 56 stories, making it a very tall building. The architects who designed it were Davis, Brody & Associates. HRH Construction was the company that built the tower.
The first six floors of the building cover the entire plot of land. The floors above these six are smaller. This design gives the building a unique shape.
Outside Look and Windows
The outside of Central Park Place is made of gray-green glass and aluminum panels. This color helps it connect visually to Central Park. Many apartments have special bay windows. These windows stick out from the building. They are almost as tall as the floor itself.
These windows are about 16 by 9 feet (4.9 by 2.7 m) in size. They create a three-sided view from inside the apartments. Some parts of the building stick out even more. This gives certain apartments amazing views of Central Park.
Inside the Building
Central Park Place has 300 apartments. These range from small studio apartments to larger two-bedroom homes. When the building first opened, apartments cost between $200,000 and $4 million. There are also four very large apartments called penthouses. The biggest penthouse is 4,200-square-foot (390 m2) and is on the 53rd floor.
The building offers many cool features for its residents. There is a swimming pool and a health and fitness club. Residents can also use a party room and a dining room. There are even four special rooms for guests visiting residents.
The main entrance area, called the lobby, was designed by Judith Stockman and Associates. The developer, William Zeckendorf Jr., wanted the lobby to feel like Central Park. So, it has wooden walls, marble surfaces, and shiny brass decorations.
History of Central Park Place
Building the Tower
The developer, William Zeckendorf Jr., began planning this project in 1982. He wanted to build a large tower with offices and 310 apartments. The plan was to spend about $135 million on the project.
There were some challenges during construction. The city government had rules about tearing down certain types of buildings. To speed things up, the residential part (Central Park Place) and the office part were separated into two different projects. More two-bedroom apartments were added to the residential tower. The outside of the building was changed from brick to glass and aluminum.
Construction on Central Park Place started in December 1985. The building was completed in 1988.
Life at Central Park Place
Apartments in Central Park Place started to be sold in September 1987. More than 200 units were sold quickly. About one-fifth of these were bought by people from other countries.
When the building was finished in 1988, the area around it was still developing. However, things changed fast. Apartments at Central Park Place became very popular. Many were sold for over a million dollars.
Some famous people have lived in Central Park Place. These include Turner Broadcasting System executive Philip I. Kent. Celebrities like Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Gene Hackman, and Al Pacino have also called it home.
