CentraleSupélec (CS) is a very famous and selective engineering school in France. It is a special type of school called a grandes écoles, which means "great school." CentraleSupélec is also part of the Paris-Saclay University. Its main campus is located in Gif-sur-Yvette, France.
The school was created on January 1, 2015. It was formed when two other well-known French schools, École Centrale Paris and Supélec, decided to join together. CentraleSupélec is considered one of the best engineering schools in France. It is also one of the most elite schools in Europe. In 2019, only about 6 to 8% of students who applied were accepted.
CentraleSupélec is a key founding member of the Paris-Saclay University. It is also part of the TIME network. This network connects top engineering schools across Europe. CentraleSupélec is also a member of the CESAER association. This group brings together European engineering schools for advanced education and research.

History of CentraleSupélec
CentraleSupélec was formed by combining two old and respected schools. These schools had long histories of training engineers.
École Centrale Paris
École Centrale Paris
École Centrale Paris was started in 1829. It was founded by Alphonse Lavallée and three important scientists. Their goal was to teach "industrial science." This meant applying new scientific discoveries to industry. They wanted to train engineers to lead the growing industrial world.
The school was first in a building called Hôtel de Juigné. In 1884, it moved to rue Montgolfier. It stayed there until 1969, when it moved to Châtenay-Malabry. In 2015, it moved to its current location.
École Supérieure d'Electricité (Supélec)
Supélec
Supélec was founded in 1894 by Eleuthère Mascart. He was a famous academic and scientist. Supélec was created to train engineers for the new and fast-growing electrical industry.
Supélec first started in Paris. Later, it moved to Malakoff. In 1975, the main campus moved to Gif-sur-Yvette. A second campus opened in Rennes in 1972. A third campus was established in Metz in 1985.
CentraleSupélec Alliance
In December 2008, the two schools, École Centrale Paris and Supélec, announced they would work together. This partnership became known as CentraleSupélec. Hervé Biausser became the director in 2013.
Today, CentraleSupélec has three campuses in France. These are in Gif-sur-Yvette, Metz, and Rennes.
Part of Paris-Saclay University
Paris-Saclay University
Since 2008, both École Centrale Paris and Supélec have helped create the Paris-Saclay University. This is a large French research university. It aims to become one of the top universities in Europe.
In October 2023, CentraleSupélec also partnered with IPSA. This partnership allows students to earn two degrees in aerospace.
The Paris-Saclay University is highly ranked globally. In 2020, it was ranked 14th in the world. This was by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). For specific subjects, it was ranked first in the world for Mathematics. It was also 9th in the world for Physics.
Studying at CentraleSupélec
Admission
Most students who join the engineering program come from French preparatory classes. These are special programs after high school. They usually last two to three years. Students focus on subjects like Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering.
CentraleSupélec offers many spots in these programs. For example, 142 spots are for Math and Physics students. The school also accepts top students from partner universities overseas. Some graduates from French public universities can also join.
Before 2018, students were admitted to either the Centralien or Supélec programs. They would get a degree from that specific program. But since 2018, all engineering students are in one "unified" program. They all graduate with the same engineering degree.
