CentraleSupélec (French pronunciation: [sɑ̃tʁalsypelɛk], CS) is a very well-known engineering school in France. It is part of the Paris-Saclay University and is located in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. This school was created on January 1, 2015. It was formed by joining two older, famous French schools: École Centrale Paris and Supélec. CentraleSupélec is considered one of the best engineering schools in France and Europe. It is quite hard to get into, with only about 6 to 8% of students being accepted in 2019.

CentraleSupélec is also a main member of the Paris-Saclay University. It is part of the TIME network and the CESAER group of European engineering schools.

A Look at CentraleSupélec's History

The Start of École Centrale Paris

École Centrale Paris was started in 1829. A person named Alphonse Lavallée helped pay for it and became its first leader. Three important scientists, Eugène Peclet, Jean-Baptiste Dumas, and Théodore Olivier, also helped. Their idea was to teach "industrial science." This meant using new scientific discoveries to solve real-world problems. They wanted to train engineers to lead new industries. The school was given to the French government in 1857.

The school first opened in a building called Hôtel de Juigné. It moved to rue Montgolfier in 1884. Later, in 1969, it moved to Châtenay-Malabry. It moved to its current location in 2015.

The Start of Supélec

Supélec was founded in 1894 by Eleuthère Mascart. He was a famous scientist who studied electricity. Supélec was created to train engineers for the growing electrical industry.

Supélec first started in Paris. It later moved to Malakoff and then to Gif-sur-Yvette in 1975. Gif-sur-Yvette is where the main campus is now. Two other campuses were opened: one in Rennes in 1972 and another in Metz in 1985.

Joining Forces: CentraleSupélec

In December 2008, École Centrale Paris and Supélec decided to work together. This partnership became known as CentraleSupélec. Hervé Biausser became the director in 2013. Today, CentraleSupélec has three campuses in France: Gif-sur-Yvette, Metz, and Rennes.

Part of Paris-Saclay University

Since 2008, both École Centrale Paris and Supélec have been involved in creating the Paris-Saclay University. This university is a big research center in France. Its goal is to become one of the top universities in Europe.

Since October 2023, CentraleSupélec has partnered with IPSA. This allows students to earn two degrees in aerospace engineering.

The Paris-Saclay University was ranked 14th in the world in 2020. This was in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It was ranked first in the world for Mathematics. It was also 9th in the world for Physics.

Becoming a Student at CentraleSupélec

How to Get Admitted

Most students who join the engineering program come from French "preparatory classes." These are special two or three-year programs after high school. They focus on subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering.

CentraleSupélec offers many spots for students from these classes. For example, it has 142 spots for students in the Mathematics and Physics program. The school also accepts top students from partner universities around the world. Some graduates from French public universities can also join.

Before 2018, students were admitted to either the Centralien or Supélec engineering programs. They would get a degree with that specific name. But since 2018, all engineering students join a single program. They all graduate with the same academic degree.

CentraleSupélec is known as one of the best engineering schools in France. Some rankings place it just below Polytechnique. Studies show that graduates from both the Ecole Centrale and Supelec programs earn some of the highest salaries in France. As part of Paris-Saclay University, it was ranked 14th globally in 2020.
