Centre is one of the ten main areas, called departments, in Haiti. It's right in the middle of the country, sharing a border with the Dominican Republic. It's special because it's the only department in Haiti that doesn't touch the sea!

Geography of Centre
The Centre Department covers an area of about 3,675 square kilometers. That's a pretty big piece of land! It shares its borders with other departments: the Nord-Est Department to the northeast, the Nord Department to the northwest, the Artibonite Department to the west, and the Ouest Department to the south. To the east, it borders the Dominican Republic.
This area has mountain ranges that stretch from west to east. The most important ones are the Montagnes Noires, which means "Black Mountains" in English. There's also a part of the Chaine du Trout d'Eau here.
Lake Peligre, the second largest lake in Haiti, is found in this department. It's an artificial lake, meaning it was created by people. It was formed when the Peligre Dam was built on the Artibonite River.
The main rivers in the department include Boucan Carré, Fer-à-Cheval, Libon, Macacia, Thomonde, and La Tombe. All these rivers flow into the Artibonite River, meaning they are its tributaries.
Population and Main City
In a 2003 count, the department had a population of 581,505 people. Out of these, 289,028 were men and 292,477 were women. Only about 16% of the people lived in cities and towns.
The main city in the Centre Department is Hinche. It is also the capital city of the department.
How Centre is Divided
The Centre Department is divided into four main areas called arrondissements. You can think of these as being similar to districts. These arrondissements are then divided into 12 smaller areas called communes, which are like municipalities or towns.
Here are the arrondissements and the communes within them:
