Scientific classification

The Centrolene muelleri is a special kind of frog that belongs to the glass frog family. It's called a glass frog because some of these frogs have skin that's so clear you can see their insides! This particular frog lives only in Peru. You can find it in the areas between the Huallaga and Marañón rivers, especially in the San Martín and Amazonas regions.

This frog was named muelleri to honor Paul S. Müller, a professor who helped with the research in Peru. People also call this frog Muller's giant glass frog or Müller's giant glass frog.

Where the Glass Frog Lives

The Centrolene muelleri frog makes its home in cloud forests. These forests are high up in the mountains, usually between 1,830 and 2,050 meters (about 6,000 to 6,700 feet) above sea level. They love to be near streams.

  • Male frogs have been seen calling out from the top of leaves. These leaves are usually about 0.5 to 2.5 meters (about 1.5 to 8 feet) above the water.
  • It's thought that the female frogs lay their eggs on leaves right above these streams. This way, when the tadpoles hatch, they can drop straight into the water.

Protecting This Special Frog

This glass frog seems to prefer places where nature hasn't been disturbed much. Sadly, its home is shrinking because of habitat loss. This means forests are being cut down or changed, which makes it harder for the frogs to live there.

  • Another danger for these frogs is a disease called Chytridiomycosis. This disease affects amphibians all over the world.
  • Good news is that this frog might live in a protected area called the Alto Mayo Protection Forest. This forest helps keep their habitat safe.
