History of Century City: From Ranch to City
The land where Century City now stands once belonged to a famous cowboy actor named Tom Mix. He used it as his ranch. Later, it became a large outdoor movie set, or "backlot," for the film company 20th Century Fox. The area got its name from "20th Century Pictures," which later joined with Fox Film Corporation in 1935.
In 1956, Spyros Skouras, who was the president of 20th Century Fox, and his nephew-in-law Edmond Herrscher, had an idea. They decided to turn the movie backlot into a new neighborhood. In 1957, they showed off their big plan for the area.
A few years later, in 1961, the film studio was having money problems because of some very expensive movies, like Cleopatra. So, they sold about 180 acres of land to developers named William Zeckendorf and Aluminum Co. of America (Alcoa). They paid $54 million, which would be like $533 million today! The new owners wanted to build "a city within a city."
The first building, called Gateway West Building, was finished in 1963. The famous Century Plaza Hotel was designed in 1964. Later, in 1969, the Century City Medical Plaza was also built.
