Joining the NFL Draft
The New Orleans Saints picked Weatherspoon in the 1972 NFL draft. He was chosen in the 13th round. He was the 320th player picked overall.
The Saints described him as a very fast player. They said he could speed up quickly. He could also make clever moves while running fast. They noted he had quick hands and feet. They also liked his positive attitude.
Weatherspoon was first placed on the Saints' taxi squad. This is a group of players who practice with the team. They can be called up to play if needed. He played in one game on November 8. This was against the Minnesota Vikings. He mostly played on special teams. After the game, he returned to the taxi squad.
Playing in the WFL
In 1975, Weatherspoon joined the Southern California Sun. This team was part of the World Football League. His brother, Ed, also joined the team. Ed played as a defensive back.
Cephus was later traded to the Birmingham Vulcans. This happened just before the season started. In his first game with the Vulcans, he made a big play. He caught a 53-yard pass. This helped set up the team's only touchdown. The Vulcans won that game. This was his only catch as a professional player. The World Football League stopped playing before the 1975 season ended. After this, Cephus played semi-pro football in 1976 and 1977.
