The Ceratophaga vicinella is a special kind of moth from the Tineidae family. It lives in a small area of the southeastern United States, mostly in Florida and Mississippi. This moth is quite unique because of what its young, called larvae, like to eat!

Meet the Gopher Tortoise Moth!

This interesting moth is sometimes called the Gopher Tortoise Moth. It belongs to the same family as clothes moths, but its diet is much more unusual. It lives only in certain parts of Florida and Mississippi.

A Very Picky Eater

What makes Ceratophaga vicinella so special is its diet. Its larvae (the caterpillar stage) are the only known Lepidoptera (the group that includes moths and butterflies) that eat solid keratin. Keratin is a tough protein found in things like hair, nails, horns, and shells.

Most moths in the Ceratophaga group eat the horns and hooves of dead animals like deer. But C. vicinella is even pickier! It eats only the shells of dead gopher tortoises. This makes the moth's survival closely linked to the gopher tortoise.

Why is its Food So Special?

Imagine eating something as hard as a fingernail! That's what the larvae of this moth do. Keratin is a very strong material. It's amazing that these tiny moth larvae can break it down and get nutrients from it. This unique diet makes them one of the most fascinating moths.

Life as a Larva

The larvae of C. vicinella are whitish with a dark brown head. They live and feed together on the tortoise shells. To stay safe, they build a network of silk tubes on the underside of the shell. These tubes act like anchors, digging into the soil up to 10 centimeters deep.

These silk tubes might also protect the larvae from very hot or cold temperatures. They could also keep away parasitoids, which are tiny insects that lay their eggs inside other insects. The larvae eat and then turn into pupae (the resting stage before becoming an adult moth) inside these protective tubes.

What Does the Adult Moth Look Like?

The adult C. vicinella moth looks like a typical moth from the Tineidae family. It is blackish-brown. Each of its front wings has a tiny white spot. It also has a noticeable tuft of cream-colored hair on its head.

Facing Challenges

Sadly, the number of C. vicinella moths seems to be going down. This is almost certainly because the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is also facing threats. Since the moth relies completely on dead gopher tortoise shells for food, if the tortoises disappear, so will this unique moth. Protecting gopher tortoises is important for the survival of this special moth species too.
