History of Cercadillo
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This made Puerto Rico a territory of the U.S., but not a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Cercadillo and a nearby barrio called Lapa had a total of 1,047 people living there together.
