History of Cerinza
Long ago, before the Spanish arrived, the area where Cerinza is now was part of the Muisca Confederation. This was a group of native people called the Muisca. They lived in the central highlands of the Colombian Andes mountains. The Muisca spoke a language called Chibcha. In their language, the word "Cerinza" means "my throat." The town was named after a local leader, or cacique, who had the same name.
In 1538, a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada came to this area. Later, on January 7, 1554, a person named Melchor Vanegas officially founded the modern town of Cerinza.
