Cerro Cora National Park is the biggest protected area in Paraguay. It covers a huge space of 5,538 hectares! This special park is located in the Amambay Department, about 45 kilometers from the city of Pedro Juan Caballero, which is right near the border with Brazil. The park was created on February 11, 1976. It's important because it protects nature and is also a major historical site. It was the place where the last battle of the Paraguayan War happened on March 1, 1870.

What Makes Cerro Cora Special?

This park has many interesting things to see. You can find historical monuments and a museum that tells the story of the area. There's also a nice recreation area by the Aquidabán River where visitors can relax.

Besides its history, many people visit the park to see ancient rock writings. These amazing drawings are found in caves around the hills.

A Look Back in Time

The Paraguayan War was a big conflict that lasted from 1864 to 1870. It ended right next to the Aquidaban Nigui Brook, which is inside the park. This is where Francisco Solano López, a famous leader, died. He said his last words, "I die along with my country." Luckily, Paraguay was not completely lost, but the war left the country very damaged.

The area that is now Cerro Cora National Park was once a wild Rain Forest. Over time, it started to suffer from deforestation, meaning trees were being cut down. To protect this important natural space, the area was declared a protected zone, and the National Park was created.

The park is surrounded by many hills. Some of these are Ponta Porá, Guazu, Tacuru Pytâ, Alambique, Cerro Corá, Miron, Tanqueria, and Tangaro. These hills create a unique and beautiful landscape.

Getting There

Cerro Cora National Park is about 454 kilometers from Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay. It's also 45 kilometers from Pedro Juan Caballero.

If you are traveling from Asunción, you can take Ruta 2 to Coronel Oviedo city. From there, you would take Ruta 3 until it connects with Ruta 5. Then, you take the exit towards Yby Yaú city.

Culture and Ancient Art

The park is organized into different zones. Each zone has a special theme and is easy to access. There are guides and guards to help visitors. The park also has an auditorium, a visitors center, and a place for recreation.

One of the most amazing cultural features of the park are the Petroglyphs. These are ancient drawings carved into rock shelters. In 2008, a team of experts from the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira studied these rock carvings. They found that some of them are incredibly old, dating back about 5,000 years! Today, the Paï Tavytera indigenous people live in this region.
