History of Cerro Gordo
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 843 people lived in Cerro Gordo at that time.

Earthquakes in the Area
During the 2019-2020 Puerto Rico earthquakes, some people from Cerro Gordo had to leave their homes. Their homes were damaged by the shaking.
The Lydia Meléndez School in Asomante barrio became a safe place for them. People from nearby areas like Las Marías and Atalaya also found shelter there.
