A Look at History
Puerto Rico became a part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because Spain gave up the island in 1898. It was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of all the people. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,452 people lived in Cerro Gordo barrio at that time. Over the years, more people have moved to Cerro Gordo.
